...On how babies are inherently 'Desi'

Amongst Daniyal's first words ("woof", "baba", "bye bye") was the word "ball". Except he doesn't say it the way it's supposed to be said in the English language. His version is closer to something you'd expect from someone living in the heart of the subcontinent. Or alternatively, from someone living under the influence of someone living in the heart of the subcontinent.

And while I realise that the observant reader at this point is quizzically raising an eyebrow and wondering, "aren't you from the heart of the subcontinent?", I would just like to say, my pronunciation of "ball" is spot on. Very much like the Queen, if she were to be saying "ball" often. ("Sir Ball, I Knight thee..., Rise Sir Ball")

So it is a bit weird when my son calls out to that circular thing with one too many "a's". "B.A.A.L". A bit like "brawl" but without the "r".

Makes me wonder: you can take the baby out of the subcontinent, but you can't take the subcontinent out of the baby.

There is hope in that.
